T2 Lanes still a costly shambles
Today a stationary car parked in the southbound lane of the Mana Esplanade during peak morning traffic came close to causing many nose-to-tail accidents
National MP Nathan Guy was travelling to Parliament and was horrified to see an unattended car parked in the outside lane of the T2 lanes causing thousands of vehicles to brake suddenly.
“It was a shambles. I saw cars trying to swerve into the busy lane, dodging big trucks and vehicles with single occupants.
“Transit and the Porirua City Council have been doing a $70,000 review of the lanes that has, so far, has taken over 6 months. While the clock ticks, motorists are still confused over which lane they should be travelling in and are hoping for a safer solution
“Motorists want the T2 lanes opened up to all traffic during peak times, regardless of how many people are in each car. These lanes are causing bottleneck traffic congestion over weekends and it will be interesting to see if the review will tackle these types of issues.”
Answers to Parliamentary questions show that over 6,000 warning letters have been issued to drivers travelling in the wrong lane last year, costing over $100,000 to collect and process this data.
“This proves the design is a costly shambles and Transit must fix this problem sooner, rather than later”.
