Guy Likes Plans for State Highways
Otaki MP Nathan Guy says National’s plan to spend an additional $1 billion on the state highway network over the next three years is good news for the Kapiti and Horowhenua districts.
“I lobbied the Transport Minister hard last week as he visited the districts recently to take a firsthand look at the transport issues we face. He made it clear that the state highway from Wellington all the way to Levin was in need of major investment,” Mr Guy says.
“So, I’m optimistic that some of that funding will come our way.”
He also says National’s plan to ditch the regional fuel taxes in favour of a smaller across-the-board fuel tax is a much fairer option.
“The regional fuel taxes were costly to implement and may have resulted in motorists driving out of the Wellington region to Levin to fuel up avoiding a potential 10 cents per litre tax.”
Mr Guy says he will continue to work closely with the Transport Minister to finalise a plan for the state highway network north from Wellington.
“We need improvements north from Wellington to cater for the 24,000 vehicles that use the main road every day. “
“This cash injection into roading compliments the double tracking and rail electrification to Waikanae that is under way and progressing well.”
“Changes to the Resource Management Act (RMA) will mean we can get the bulldozers started sooner and I’m looking forward to seeing them start building Kapiti’s Western Link Road later this year.”
