Guy wants local youth to benefit from $152m package
Otaki MP Nathan Guy wants young people, local businesses and community groups to take advantage of the $152 million Youth Opportunities Package announced by Prime Minister John Key.
The package features a range of initiatives to create work, education and training opportunities for unemployed young people. It includes subsidies for businesses and community groups that create opportunities.
Mr Guy says youth unemployment (those aged 18 to 24) in Kapiti and Horowhenua has risen significantly in the past year, rising from around 70 to 330 at the end of June.
“This youth package is a great opportunity for local businesses, councils, iwi and community groups to help our young people get off the dole and gain some valuable skills and work experience.”
There are two key programmes within the package, Job Ops and Community Max.
The Job Ops programme subsidises employers by $5000 for each young person they hire into an entry level position for six months.
“Community Max focuses on projects which benefit communities. We’re looking to all kinds of community groups to come forward with their ideas.”
There will be 3000 places available nationwide for community projects and the Government will meet the full cost of the minimum wage.
Businesses and community groups can phone 0800 778 008 for more details about Job Ops and Community Max.
Mr Guy says there are other opportunities available to young people ranging from fees-free training in polytechs, wananga or private training establishments to six week military-style training programmes.
“I urge our young people and local businesses to take up these opportunities. I don’t want to see our future generation languishing on a benefit when we need their help to boost growth and productivity,” says Mr Guy.
