Kapiti Roading SH1
The SH1 roading choices facing the Kapiti Coast will determine the way our communities will connect with each other and the wider region for years to come.
That’s why it’s so important that we all take time to learn as much as possible about the various options and what will work best for us and those who travel through our district.
I have been meeting with key groups over the past week along with New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) officials and it is clear that people agree something needs to happen – it’s just a matter of what.
The Kapiti Coast has talked about the Sand Hill’s motorway and Western Link Road (WLR) for about 50 years. Over this time Kapiti has been one of the fastest growing areas in New Zealand with only one road connecting Paraparaumu and Waikanae – that’s SH1. The highway is badly congested and dangerous in places and a long term solution is needed.
I’ve always believed that the Western Link Road would connect the Raumati, Paraparaumu and Waikanae communities and both options being proposed will secure the linkage of these communities. Some groups are keen to see the expressway travel down the WLR designation and that may become a consideration.
Because of the variety of feedback I have received, Minister of Transport Hon Steven Joyce will front three public meetings with me.
The public meetings will be held on Wednesday 9 September at:
· Te Horo Hall, School Road, Te Horo 4pm
· El Rancho Hall, Kauri Road, Waikanae, 5.30pm
· Southwards Museum, Otaihanga Road, Paraparaumu 7.30pm
Another opportunity to learn more about the proposals is via the information days being held in Paraparaumu, Waikanae and Otaki by the NZTA, which I will be attending over the next week. More details on these days can be found at my website, www.nathanguy.co.nz.
Please make sure you make the most of these opportunities to learn more about the proposals and send your feedback form in. This is our chance to obtain the best long-term solution for our district.
