Employment focus for central region - Otaki MP
Getting young people into work is the big thrust behind the Ministry of Social Development’s plan for the central region, Otaki MP Hon Nathan Guy said today.
Speaking at the launch of the Ministry of Social Development’s 2009-10 Regional Plan in Kapiti and joined by mayors from the central region, Mr Guy says the area’s high youth population means it’s vital young job-seekers climb onto the first rung of the employment ladder.
“I want to see this region retain its talented people. The work being done to create jobs and to find people to fill them has taken a massive effort and I’m proud of what business, government and community groups have achieved.”
The central region extends from Kapiti to the Tararua district, taking in Horowhenua, Manawatu, Palmerston North and the Wairarapa. Other priorities of the regional plan include helping young people thrive, keeping children safe and obtaining value for money.
Mr Guy says the Ministry’s initiatives have boosted employment in the central region, particularly the Community Max and Job Ops schemes.
“This region is creating more Community Max opportunities than any other in the country. We’ve currently got 95 young people in Community Max work, with a further 25 due to start by the end of the month. Come January, I expect to see the programme employing around 150 people.
“Job Ops, which places young people in private employment, has been up and running for just 12 weeks. Already, 97 people have found work through the scheme.
“It’s heartening to see the value the Ministry places on working with local businesses to support them with skilled staff. It’s especially pleasing to see businesses stepping up and investing in young people as they start their careers.”
