Otaki MP welcomes new paramedic for Foxton
Otaki MP Nathan Guy has welcomed Helen Gibbons as the new St Johns Ambulance paramedic for Foxton last night.
“Helen will be a great asset for the local community and help deliver an even better service,” said Mr Guy.
Ms Gibbons is the first officer to be employed in the Otaki electorate with new funding from the government, announced by Health Minister Tony Ryall last year. $28 million will be invested in new paramedics over the next four years, with priority given to busy areas with the heaviest workloads.
“I’m thrilled the government has recognised the need for good ambulance services in places like Foxton. Local people need to know that help is there in times of need.
“Having a quick response time when people call 111 is very important and an extra paramedic in Foxton will help create a safer community and benefit Horowhenua.”
Foxton now has four paid officers supported by unpaid volunteers. The station can cover as far south as Peka Peka and as far north as Palmerston North, and last year responded to 1350 callouts.
“I also want to thank the volunteers who serve in Foxton. It can be a tough job going to callouts and emergencies but I know local people are very grateful for what they do.”
Before joining the Foxton team this month Ms Gibbons previously worked as a volunteer ambulance officer in Palmerston North.
