Guy meets with regional leaders over Capital Connection
Otaki MP Nathan Guy has met with representatives from KiwiRail, Horizons Regional Council and District Mayors yesterday to discuss the future of the Capital Connection train service.
“We had a productive meeting and I remain committed to a viable rail link between Palmerston North and Wellington.
“KiwiRail have a number of options, including maintaining the status quo, a shuttle service using existing Silver Fern rail cars, or integrating both. These need to be worked through and fully costed.
“The Capital Connection is a commercial service, and a very important transport link for people living in Shannon, Otaki and Levin as well as the two main cities.
“Huge progress is being made on electrification and double tracking the railway line from Wellington to Waikanae. I’m looking forward to new and more comfortable units that will start operating in 2011.
“This will be great news for people using these trains, but it may change passenger behaviour and reduce the numbers of people using the Capital Connection service in southern Kapiti.
“I’ll be working closely with KiwiRail on this issue,” said Mr Guy.
