Guy pleased Kapiti rail upgrade is on track
Otaki MP Nathan Guy today witnessed the positive progress being made on the $90 million Kapiti rail upgrade.
“This 14 kilometre project, once completed, will see modern reliable trains reaching Waikanae,” said Mr Guy.
“The progress made so far is impressive. Half the new poles are up, some track work is being laid and new trains are due to arrive next year.
“The contractors have made great progress on this project. It has been challenge dealing with the peat soils, continued rail movements and the location right next to SH1.
“This project will be a real boost for Waikanae. A big focus now is on upgrading Waikanae station and extending the carpark.
“KiwiRail is working with NZTA and the Kapiti Coast District Council on proposals to make sure the introduction of trains does not unduly affect traffic at Elizabeth Street in Waikanae.
“It looks like existing TranzMetro units will be operating into Waikanae early next year, with the Matangi trains due to arrive later in 2011,” said Mr Guy.
The Wellington Region Rail Programme is a joint programme between Greater Wellington Regional Council and KiwiRail. It includes a new fleet of electric Matangi trains, and extending electrification and double tracked lines to Waikanae.
