Guy launches new plan for Ministry of Social Development
Otaki MP Nathan Guy has launched the Ministry of Social Development’s 2010-2012 plan for the Central Region today, with the priorities of stimulating economic growth, creating sustainable employment and improving the lives and living standards of people.
The Central Region covers the districts of Kapiti, Horowhenua, Manawatu, Tararua and the Wairarapa.
“This plan outlines how the Ministry is working on employment opportunities and improving services to local people,” says Mr Guy.
“A major priority is working to help find employment for people before they need a benefit.
“I encourage employers to come forward with job opportunities, especially where they can give a chance to a young person. Many young people in this region have already gained skills and experience through the Job Ops programme and many now have permanent jobs or entered into training.
“Positive expansion projects in Levin like the Alliance meat processing plant, McDonalds café and the upgraded cinema will all help to attract new employment opportunities in Horowhenua.
“The global economic slowdown has affected everyone and our region is no different, but as the economy recovers we need to work hard to get people back into work with the right skills and training.
“The Work and Income office in Levin is soon moving to a Community Link centre that will bring together social agencies under one roof to coordinate care and make it easier for people to access these services.
“The plan also outlines how the ‘Fresh Start’ package will provide more options for the youth justice system to get troubled youth back on track, with a strong focus on employment.
“This focus on employment is very important because having a job is better for individuals, families and communities.”
