Lower speed limit welcomed for Opiki School
Otaki MP Nathan Guy has welcomed the New Zealand Transport Agency’s decision to lower the speed limit outside Opiki School to 80 km/hr.
“I’m very pleased that NZTA have listened to the concerns of the community and motorists about this issue. As local MP I’ve worked hard on behalf of local students and their parents, and I’m pleased we have a good outcome.
“In 2007 I lobbied Transit NZ to install a barrier fence around the school, but concerns have remained.
“State Highway 56 is an increasingly busy road which carries more and more traffic every year. This speed reduction will ultimately help to reduce crashes in the area.
“It’s great that NZTA are also involving the local community in a programme to raise awareness of safety on rural roads.
“The new speed signs on Tane and Poplar roads will also help raise awareness of approaching this dangerous part of SH56.
“Along with the improvements to the intersection, this will help make this section of road safer for locals and motorists.”
