Guy welcomes start of SH1 consultation
Otaki MP Nathan Guy has welcomed the start of consultation by NZTA and Kapiti Coast District Council on the future of State Highway 1, which will become a local road once the Kapiti expressway is complete.
“Many people haven’t realised that SH1 will become a local two lane road. This is a great long term solution for the Kapiti community.
“The local two-lane road that I’m calling the ‘Eastern Link’ will compliment the new four lane Expressway that also connects Paraparaumu and Waikanae communities.
“SH1 becoming a local road will play an important part in the development of both town centres. With heavy traffic removed, we can think about making our towns more attractive for pedestrians, shoppers, walkers and cyclists.
“I encourage people to attend the open days. This is an exciting project for the future of our communities, and people should bring their ideas along.
“The whole Kapiti expressway project is full steam ahead, and people are glad to finally have certainty. There is a huge amount of public support for the Expressway, and I've had many people stop me in the street and say “just get on with it”.
“It makes the Labour party’s promise to scrap the expressway look even more stupid. The last thing local people want is to go back to the drawing board and start this whole process all over again.”
Two expos will be held next week:
• Sunday 7 August, 11am – 3pm: Waikanae Memorial Hall
• Wednesday 10 August, 4pm – 7pm: Kapiti Community Centre
