Trade Academy provides new pathway for Horowhenua students
Otaki MP Nathan Guy has welcomed the announcement of a new Trades Academy to be run by UCOL involving Horowhenua.
“Trade Academies are a great option for students who don’t necessarily suit academic study. Instead of just dropping out, they can learn practical skills on their doorstep which will lay the foundation for finding a decent job.
“The Education Minister Anne Tolley has announced that 10 new Trades Academies will be opened around the country from next year. These provide practical skills training for Year 11 to 13 school students, while allowing them to study for NCEA credits and tertiary qualifications at the same time.
“The UCOL-run Academy will operate in Palmerston North, and will partner with industry training groups and Horowhenua College. A total of 100 places will be offered to for courses in mechanical engineering, fashion, beauty and hairdressing, joinery and electrical engineering across the wider Manawatu region.
“Some of the programmes will operate out of Horowhenua College, and students from Manawatu, Waiopehu and Otaki Colleges will be involved too.
“The initial proposal is to run the classes for two half days a week, and have one day in the workplace. This will be a good opportunity for students to put into practice what they’ve learnt in the classroom by gaining practical work experience with local businesses.
“Its also good news for local employers, as these young people will have better skills and discipline when they enter the workforce.
“I’m proud the Government has recognised the need to support the trades in Horowhenua, and at the same time engage young people into training and employment,” says Mr Guy.
