Guy welcomes drop in crime rate for Horowhenua and Kapiti
Otaki MP Nathan Guy has welcomed the drop in local crime rates, with Horowhenua falling by 7.5% and Kapiti by 6.2% for the 2010/11 year.
"This is great result for the community and local police who are doing an excellent job. In particular, it’s great to see a 28% decline in burglaries for both regions.
"Police have told me that community groups like Neighbourhood Support and Night Patrols have made a real difference.
"This continues a local trend of decreasing crime, with figures for the 2010 also showing a similar decline.
"I’m proud to be part of a Government which has boosted police numbers and brought in tough new laws to tackle crime.
"It’s now harder to get bail, parole has been tightened, and we have ‘three strikes’ legislation to keep the worst violent offenders off our streets.
"We’ve introduced Police safety orders to combat family violence, tasers are available more easily to police, and every offender now pays a $50 levy to benefit the victims of serious crime.
"The crimestoppers hotline is also a very important tool for police. They rely very heavily on the support of the local community, so please phone 0800 555 111 if you have any information they can use."
