Guy welcomes water funding for Shannon
Otaki MP Nathan Guy has welcomed the Government’s funding of over $2.1 million to upgrade Shannon’s drinking water supply.
"This is great news for the people of Shannon who have had to put up with sub-standard drinking water for too long,” says Mr Guy.
"As local MP I’ve lobbied hard on this issue and I’m very pleased the National Government has awarded this funding. This is a significant Government investment of around $4000 per Shannon household.
"People living in small towns and rural communities shouldn’t have to put up with poor water quality.
"Congratulations to Horowhenua District Council on their successful application to the Ministry of Health for this funding. This upgrade has been on the Council books for over a decade, and I remember fronting a public meeting in Shannon when I was on the Council in the early 2000s.
"This upgrade would have struggled to occur without the National Governments’ support. Last year the criteria for the scheme was reviewed to make sure communities most in need were getting access to funding.
"In total this year the Government is spending $9.4 million on 29 projects around the country, meaning about 22,000 people will get better drinking water.
"There were 100 applications for this year’s scheme, which is open to communities with 25 to 5000 permanent residents. Each year until 2015 $10 million will be available."
