Guy welcomes new Kapiti flights
Otaki MP Nathan Guy has welcomed the start of Air New Zealand flights into Kapiti airport today as a major boost for the region.
"This is a proud day for Kapiti, and the wider region. It recognises that we’ve become an important centre in our own right and it opens up an exciting future.
"The flights will be convenient for locals and a real boost to the regional economy. We now have much quicker access to New Zealand’s biggest city, and our international gateway.
"It also gives us the chance to promote tourism and attract visitors. I’ll be doing everything I can to encourage people to use these flights and I’m hopeful that new destinations might be added in future.
"Up to 5,000 jobs are expected to be created at the Kapiti Airport Business Park. Once Transmission Gully and the Kapiti Expressway is complete, the airport and our region will be more connected than ever.
"I’ve been a strong supporter of the airport development since I first met owner Noel Robinson. In 2006 he lodged for consent to develop the airport, attracting 900 submissions opposed and 100 in support. I was in the minority who spoke in support and I’m pleased to see the community is now behind this project.
"I want to congratulate Sir Noel for his vision and hard work. He has shown real determination over five years to see this project through,” says Mr Guy.
