Nathan Guy launches local campaign
Otaki MP Nathan Guy has officially launched his 2011 election campaign for the Otaki seat in Waikanae yesterday.
"I’m very proud to be the local MP for Otaki, and I’m proud of what’s been achieved over the last three years,” Mr Guy said at the launch, attended by about 200 supporters and Deputy Prime Minister Bill English.
"For the first time in decades, we have a Government that has invested heavily in the infrastructure we need so badly.
"We finally have a decision to build the Kapiti Expressway after decades of talk and indecision. We need it and I will ensure it is built.
"We need to send a clear message that we want this investment, and that we want to keep moving forward as a region."
Mr Guy also listed Transmission Gully, new trains and rail services, improved paramedic services, Air New Zealand flights from Paraparaumu, drinking water for Shannon, home insulation for Foxton, a new school for Waikanae and falling crime rates as highlights of the last three years.
Mr Guy spoke of his long family history in the region, starting with his Great Grandfather Joseph Nathan who was Chairman of the Wellington Manawatu Railway company.
His Grandfather Duncan Guy served as Horowhenua County Chair when it included Waikanae, as did his father Malcolm Guy, who was also the first Mayor of Horowhenua District Council.
"Unfortunately neither of them had the vision to build a second bridge over the Waikanae River – but I have and I will ensure it happens!
"It's a great privilege to be the local MP for Otaki and I want to continue to be your strong voice in Parliament over the next three years."
Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bill English spoke at the launch about the importance of getting debt under control and moving the economy forward.
He emphasised the importance of getting a strong party vote for National to return John Key as Prime Minister and provide stable leadership.
He pointed out that unlike the Labour Party, National was proud of its leader and willing to put him on election billboards.
