New parole law means safer communities - Guy
Otaki MP Nathan Guy has welcomed the National Party’s policy to tighten parole laws today.
National will also introduce civil detention orders to keep violent and sexual offenders behind bars indefinitely.
"A law change will mean the very worst high risk sexual or violent offenders could be kept in custody after their sentences are finished, in order to protect the public.
"Too many families have to face the trauma of parole hearings for offenders who are clearly not ready to re-enter society. Screening parole applications in advance will reduce these unnecessary hearings.
"This builds on tougher bail laws announced by Prime Minister John Key in Paraparaumu recently, and 18 other new laws the National Government has introduced over the last three years to tackle crime and support victims.
"Crime rates have fallen by 6.2% in Kapiti and 7.5% in Horowhenua over the last year, but we can still do more to create even safer communities,” says Mr Guy.
"We now have more police on the street, with 600 new officers by the end of this year. Levin will soon have five new police on the beat.
"The new neighbourhood policing unit in Levin is another big step forward. Local police will be engaging on the doorsteps of Levin homes to become more proactive in policing. This very visible policing is sure to make a real difference," says Mr Guy.
