Guy welcomes funding to clean up Manawatu River
Otaki MP Nathan Guy has welcomed $5.2 million in funding from the Government as a major step towards cleaning up the Manawatu River.
“The Prime Minister has announced nearly $8 million in funding for cleaning up polluted water bodies, with $5.2 million going towards the Manawatu River.
“The Manawatu is New Zealand’s most polluted river, and it’s clear that local and regional councils need help to tackle the problem. The pollution has built up over many decades from a variety of sources, but this funding is a major step forward.
“In June last year an action plan was launched at Foxton Beach to start the cleanup, involving a wide range of groups. Local councils, iwi, industry, environmental groups and the farming community have all committed to this project.
“At the time I said I would lobby for funding from the National Government and I'm delighted with this announcement.
”This is a major boost to local efforts, representing 17% of the total cost. This will help with projects like stream fencing and upgrading six sewage treatment plants.
”This is now the perfect opportunity to stop looking back over shoulders, pointing the blame and instead move forward in a positive united direction.
”These proposed improvements to the river system won't be a quick fix, but it’s a start for future generations to enjoy the benefits.
“I want to thank all the local volunteers, groups and stakeholders who have shown a determination to clean up the river.
“This project is particularly important to the Foxton community. The Manawatu River estuary is an internationally recognised bird sanctuary, and local volunteers from the Save Our River Trust are doing great work cleaning up the Foxton river loop and creating walking tracks,” says Mr Guy.
