Guy welcomes Transmission Gully plans
Otaki MP Nathan Guy has welcomed confirmation that Transmission Gully will be built as a public private partnership (PPP).
“This is a great decision. It means that Transmission Gully can be built
quicker and at less cost to the taxpayer, with construction likely to
begin in 2014 and the road due to open around 2020. I’ve always
supported the private sector having a role in this project.
“The New Zealand Transport Agency estimates it will save around 10 minutes off a trip to or from Wellington for Kapiti peak hour commuters, but the wider benefits are much greater than that.
“The recent Board of Inquiry agreed that a new four-lane highway will tackle congestion, reduce travel times and provide a much safer route.
“It will provide us with a crucial second route between Wellington and Kapiti, and be a real boost to the regional economy.
“This will be one of the biggest roading construction projects in the region for a long time, and is a key part of the Wellington Airport to Levin Road of National Significance.
“I’m proud to be part of a Government which has finally got this project underway, and that has reformed the Resource Management to stop these kinds of projects becoming bogged down in red tape.
“This is in stark contrast to Labour and the Greens who remain opposed to the Kapiti expressway and Transmission Gully. Any change of Government would see these projects scrapped, more congestion, and our region starved of economic development,” says Mr Guy.
