Investigation of Whirokino trestle bridge replacement welcomed
Otaki MP Nathan Guy welcomes the announcement by the Prime Minister and the Transport Minister that investigation and consenting will be finalised for a replacement of the Whirokino trestle bridge.
“This is great news for motorists and the Horowhenua District," Mr Guy says.
"Constructed in 1938, the Whirokino trestle bridge is very narrow and can’t carry overweight vehicles like long-haul trucks. Final investigations will allow the replacement bridge to be finalised and funded,” says Mr Guy.
Prime Minister John Key today announced $212 million from the Future Investment Fund for a package of 14 regionally-important state highway projects, including the replacement for the Whirokino trestle bridge.
“National is making it easier, and safer, for people and freight to get around the country and these projects are a significant part of that plan.”
The Whirokino trestle bridge replacement project is estimated to cost $25-30 million and construction could start as early as 2015.
"This will be a big bonus for the Foxton community during construction, with workers spending locally. These benefits are being realised in the Kapiti community with the Kapiti expressway build well underway.
“National is getting on with the job. Alongside the ongoing work on Transmission Gully and the Kapiti expressway, we have a clear plan to address the transport needs of the region.”
