Guy celebrates Lake Horowhenua Accord first anniversary
Otaki MP Nathan Guy has today celebrated the first anniversary of the signing of the Lake Horowhenua Accord, and the launch of an action plan to restore the lake’s health.
“This is fantastic news for all parties involved, and another great step towards returning the lake to a source of pride for the Horowhenua community,” Mr Guy says.
“One year on from the historic signing, today’s announcement gives momentum to the Accord’s commitment to address long-standing problems around the lake’s water quality.”
The Government is contributing $540,000 towards the restoration of the lake through the Fresh Start for Freshwater Clean-up Fund. Contributions from Horizons, DOC, Horowhenua District Council, the Tararua Growers Association make up a total lake restoration fund of $1.27 million.
The Action Plan out to 2016 identifies the roles and responsibilities of the five parties involved in the cleanup of the Lake.
This includes detail on the eight key issues impacting the Lake, as well as 15 key management actions for its restoration such as lake weed harvesting, riparian enhancement, farm environmental plans, and public education.
“Last week I was at the lake for the completion of the new wash-down facility which will reduce the risk of further lake weed species being introduced to Lake Horowhenua,” Mr Guy says.
“The completion of full restoration of the lake will take time, but the benefits of this collaborative approach are already very clear and the plan has real momentum."
