Water Quality
This Government has a real focus on improving water quality, sustainability and the environment, and balancing this with jobs and growth.
It’s great therefore to see a progress report detailing the work achieved under Manawatu River Leader’s Accord
The Manawatu River Accord received $5.2 million funding from the Government, which will contribute to restoring the health and overall quality of the Manawatu River.
Partners and supporters of the Accord also include Horizons Regional Council, Horowhenua District Council, local Iwi and industry.
I realise the importance of water quality, not only on our domestic life, but also our international reputation.
That is why initiatives such as the Manawatu River Accord are so important. During its short time frame, the Accord has started to deliver wastewater treatment upgrades, fenced off over 200 km of streams, started fish restoration projects and planted 66,000 plants.
All of these efforts, achieved by numerous groups, have all contributed to the success of the Accord. And the Lake Horowhenua Accord has an action plan to achieve by 2016.
Both of these environmental efforts will go a long way to restoring the health of our region’s resources.
Talking health and well-being, congratulations to MenzShed Kapiti who were recognised at the Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards.
I have visited MenzShed at Waikanae Beach and it brings local residents together in a friendly environment to work on building and maintenance projects for the community.
There is another shed in Kapiti that is also making waves. The Kapiti Shed Project is a local organisation that exists to provide opportunities for men with disabilities to contribute in a working environment.
‘The Shed’ receives funding from the Government, community trusts and businesses. It recently expanded to employ four people.
Importantly, it allows disabled people the chance to experience a working environment and cross certain barriers they may never have had the chance to before.
Both sheds are making a positive difference in our community. Keep up the good work.
