Volunteers
Congratulations to all recipients of the recent Horowhenua Civic Awards held last week.
It is great Council publicly recognise members of our community who work so hard to make a positive difference.
The calibre of recipients was very high across a wide range of categories. The awards were as follows – Mayoral Certificates: Dylan Kiriona and Detlef Klein; Civic Honour: Christine Warren, Heather Birrell, Colin Brown, Rod and Bev Poulton and Gloy Deadman; Certificate of Recgonition: Brian Gilbert, Dianne Spicer, Dorothy Wenham and Colin Honey; 50 Years of Service Medal: Margaret Craddock, Betty Montford and Aileen Jennings.
Many of these volunteers don’t do it for recognition; just to give something back to their community they are passionate about.
In Kapiti, it was great to see the community rally around the Papara family, whose home was destroyed in a late night fire recently.
A fundraiser event was held at Murphy’s Law Bar in Waikanae, raising about $4,500 for the family. It was heartening to see the community and local businesses support this family in need.
The Waikanae Volunteer Fire Brigade has recently been given a $750 grant from the Nikau Kapiti Fund. All our local volunteer fire brigades do an outstanding job of keeping our community safe.
The money has been used to buy new equipment that will give the volunteer fire fighters faster access to burning buildings.
Volunteering plays a vital part in our community. For those looking to get more involved in the Kapiti area, you can contact [email protected].
Get in touch; I am sure they would be pleased to hear from you.
