Let's look out for each other
The days have got colder and winter is round the corner. That means the flu season is here and due to recent events it has been a hot topic of conversation in the last couple of weeks. I have talked with some local GPs who tell me they are getting heaps of enquiries about flu (or influenza) and the Swine flu virus (H1N1) in particular.
At the time of writing it appears that in New Zealand cases are very mild - the number of confirmed cases is low and these people have recovered relatively quickly. However, until a vaccine for this flu and any variants is in place, it would not be sensible to let our guard down.
The National Government has responded quickly to the potential threat by putting in place the pandemic strategy; this includes monitoring our borders and travellers arriving from areas of concern, mainly the United States and Mexico.
We have more than one million courses of Tamiflu stored and further stocks of antiviral drug supplies have been ordered. Local pharmacies report increased requests for antivirals. To buy these you will need to have flu symptoms or a prescription. The stocks are there for those who need it.
The pork industry is one of many money earners for our local economy and it is important that you know it is absolutely safe to eat our pork products.
Some local retailers, like supermarkets, have their front line staff disinfecting their hands between customers. I am rapt that as a community we are looking out for each other.
This winter, more than any other, this responsibility belongs to all of us. Any worrying symptoms on top of normal flu symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea, should be followed up with a call to the Healthline (0800 611 116) or a visit to your local GP.
And thanks to our health professionals - you are all doing a wonderful job.
