Supergold card
The government is putting an extra $9 million into the SuperGold card over the next two years which is good news for retired people.
Free off-peak public transport has proved hugely popular for superannuitants. A number of retired people rely on public transport for medical appointments, to visit friends and family and maintain an active lifestyle.
Many people have told me how much they value this service, especially if they can no longer drive.
The new money means that services will remain the same for users and we have more certainty for the future.
At the same time, the government is negotiating a better deal on behalf of the tax payer. We don’t want transport providers to be out of pocket, but we don’t them to unduly profit from the scheme either.
The SuperGold card will be even more useful next year when the Paraparaumu line is extended to Waikanae, with new trains and more regular and reliable services.
This month has also seen an increase in NZ Super because of the tax cuts. A married couple who receive NZ Super, own their own home, and do not have any other income, will be about $11 a week better off.
Superannuation payments have been supplemented with an extra assistance payment of 2.02% to match the small rise in GST. Some locals have contacted my office this week, concerned that this increase is only temporary.
I can confirm that this increase will carry over. NZ Superannuation will be adjusted again in April next year to match (and better) any further increase in the cost of living.
It’s also worth noting that inflation is at its lowest level in six years, which is good news for balancing the budget.
I believe it’s very important we look after older New Zealanders who have worked hard and paid taxes all their lives.
The SuperGold card and more money in the hand are two important ways of recognising that contribution.
Also this week I attended the opening of the new garages to securely store the health shuttle vans at the Health Centre in Levin. This wonderful service - supported by volunteers - have had their busiest month transporting 960 patients from Levin to Palmerston North.
This service is not just for the elderly, but anyone who might struggle to get themselves to Palmerston North hospital. Well done team.
