Our local Governor General
Congratulations to Kapiti resident Jerry Mateparae who has been announced as New Zealand’s next Governor-General.
This is a huge honour, and is technically the highest position in our constitution. The Governor General is the Queen’s personal representative, our Head of State, and signs legislation and regulations on her behalf.
Mr Mateparae has an outstanding career behind him. After joining the army as a 17 year old he rose to become Chief of the New Zealand Defence Force in 2006.
Just a few weeks ago he was the guest speaker at a Kapiti Chamber of Commerce business lunch, where he talked about the lessons he has learnt and the role of the military in helping Christchurch recover from the earthquake of last month.
Prime Minister John Key has made a great choice. Mr Mateparae is relatively young and has a lot of authority and mana. He officially takes up his role at the end of August, replacing Sir Anand Satyanand.
I got a real appreciation of the work done by the Governor General when I visited Christchurch last week with His Excellency.
We spent a bit of time in the hard-hit eastern suburbs, talking to residents who have had a tough time.
I was impressed at the people skills of Sir Anand and his wife Lady Susan. Many people down there are tired, stressed and upset but they were genuinely thrilled to see him.
I have no doubt that Jerry Mateparae – soon to become “Sir Jeremiah” – will do just as good a job.
In a time of national disaster we need our leaders to front up and show they care. Therefore it’s great news that Prince William will be attending the memorial service in Christchurch this Friday, on behalf of the Queen. This is his third visit in six years and shows the strength of our relationship with the UK.
