Final Countdown to the Cup
The Rugby World Cup kicks off this weekend and there’s a whole range of local events to coincide.
I called in at Levin’s Village Green over the weekend to view the travelling rugby exhibition ‘Oranges at Halftime’, and ended up playing rippa-rugby with my boys and other local kids.
There was a great atmosphere with the giant inflatable rugby ball that will be an asset to our district. Well done Austin Fraser and Corey Kennett for getting this idea off the ground.
On Sunday I joined other members of the public in the “Great Living Legends Muck-In” at Whareroa Farm, near McKays Crossing. Around 2500 native trees were planted in what is becoming a great part of our recreational space. Also onsite is a working farm with public access, which is well worth a look.
Many other events are happening locally with artist Duncan Hill displaying ‘Men in Black’ at the Horowhenua Arts centre, and Foxton RSA are having a Rugby Trivia Quiz on Saturday 24 September.
Also that weekend The Rahui Football and Sports Club in Otaki are hosting a weekend of festivities. The centrepiece event will be a Heartland rugby game between East Coast and Horowhenua-Kapiti on September 24th, celebrating the strong iwi connections between the two regions.
It will be a huge weekend with a train planned to come up from Wellington.
If you are keen to watch the All Blacks on the big screen you can watch them at Focal Point Cinema, as part of the ‘Horowhenua Corporate Box’. This is a great fundraising initiative to raise money for the new Te Takere community centre.
I have even got into the rugby spirit by playing for Parliamentary rugby team in our mini-World Cup tournament. On Sunday we had a good win against the French team 44-0, so I’m a bit sore this week.
I can’t wait for the real thing to kick off this Friday night.
