Celebrating $3 billion of Lotto proceeds
This week I had the privilege of officially opening the new Horowhenua Community Link centre in Levin.
This is a new centre which combines a range of social services provided by the Government and other providers, such as WINZ, Housing NZ, ACC and the Salvation Army. It means that people can get the help and support they need under one roof, which is better for everyone.
This is a part of an increasing trend for agencies to work together to benefit our community.
Life to the Max Horowhenua is another good example of this. The Government has entrusted this well-respected group with coordinating a programme aimed at local youth. The aim is to tackle truancy, alcohol, drug and offending issues through various agencies working together.
Both these initiatives are an example of the Government focusing on frontline services, and trusting local providers to come up with local solutions.
On a similar note, New Zealand Lotteries also do a lot to support community groups.
This week in Parliament the Government acknowledged the $3 billion that has been raised for community purposes since the first Lotto draw in 1987.
We’ve seen plenty of local examples of how this money makes a difference. A couple of months ago I present a lotteries cheque for $550,000 towards the Te Takere community centre in Levin.
As Minister of Internal Affairs, I’ve seen examples like this all around the country.
These grants reach New Zealanders from all walks of life. Age Concern, St John, Barnardos, Plunket, Women's Refuges and Cancer Societies are just some of the groups that receive funding.
This year $14 million in Lottery funding has gone towards the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal, and it has even helped with Rugby World Cup celebrations.
Last year we allocated $9.5 million from the profits of New Zealand Lotteries to help fund the REAL New Zealand Festival. Overall I think this funding has really helped the World Cup become an event for all New Zealanders, in every corner of the country.
Thank you to everyone who has brought a Lotto ticket over the last 24 years – you have made a valuable donation to the community every time.
