Ultrafast broadband on its way for local schools
Otaki MP Nathan Guy has welcomed progress on providing ultrafast broadband to 13 schools and thousands of homes in the Otaki electorate.
Mr Guy met with Chorus technicians today who are upgrading 35 roadside cabinets and laying fibre near Levin, as part of the National Government’s $300m Rural Broadband Initiative.
"Work is already underway to connect local schools with broadband, which will begin in the classroom next year," says Mr Guy.
"This will have a huge impact by connecting pupils to the world and the latest teaching resources. Schools will be able to use video-conferencing, and interactive learning.
"As a parent with young children it amazes me how quickly they adapt to new technology and computers are a big part of their everyday life.
"In total, the National Government is investing $1.5 billion to roll out ultrafast broadband across the country with schools, businesses and healthcare services among the first to be connected."
The 13 local schools to be connected under the Rural Broadband Initiative are:
• Opiki School
• Tokomaru School
• Poroutawhao School
• Koputaroa School
• Ohau School
• St Peter Chanel School (Otaki)
• Manakau School
• TKKM o Te Rito
• Otaki School
• Te Kura-a-iwi o Whakatupuranga Rua Man
• Otaki College
• Waitohu School
